Sometimes pulling the plug on a bad blogging relationship becomes inevitable. Breaking up is hard to do, but it can be even harder when you cut ties with someone that has administrative access to your website and company infrastructure!
Let these three (3) tips help you terminate your professional blogger and keep your sanity (and brand) intact:
- Be Proactive Rather Than Reactive: This tip won’t help you if you’re already at the point where you know you need to fire your professional blogger, but for those not at that point, it’s worth mentioning that the best defense is a strong offense. Create your blogger’s exit strategy BEFORE you actually need it. Have two plans in place: (1) The Reasonable Option: Where your professional blogger gives you adequate notice about their departure, and you plan your final interactions and dutifully discontinue their access to select applications and websites, and (2) The Nuclear Option: Which should include a “kill switch” that lets you cut off your blogger’s access at a moment’s notice and minimizes the possibility that they can do damage to your website or your company’s image and interworkings.
- Keep Tabs and Stay Vigilant: Keep a log of all the systems and data you’ve granted your blogger access to, and make sure you’re sharing access on a “need-to-know” basis. Only grant access to files, customer lists, and proprietary company information as it is needed to generate content for your blog.
- Appreciate the Lesson Learned and Don’t Get Discouraged: When recovering from a “bad breakup”, be sure to let your new blogger know you’ve had problems in the past, so they can keep an eye out for suspicious activity on your website and administrative systems. Be reasonable with what you share with your new blogging professional, as providing too much information could paint you in a bad light and taint your new relationship before it even gets started!
